Le fait est que Connor à signé pour apparaître dans la moitié des 25 épisodes de la saison 2. Ce qui fait d'une certaine façon un personnage régulier. D'après un agent, cette décision vient plus du fait que son contrat lui laisse du temps libre pour se consacrer à d'autres projets à la TV ou au cinema. L'acteur et son agent ont refusés de commenter cette décision.

This has nothing to do with its quality (or lack there of), as our omission of The Office does. We just don't watch it. That being said, we'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention Mother, since every person we know who watches the show unabashedly loves it. Someday we'll likely join the club, plowing through episode after episode on an extended DVD viewing marathon. However, that day has yet to come.

Deliciously trashy, incredibly inappropriate (we still feel dirty for having seen the whole "15-year-old Jenny dances in her bra" episode), wildly funny and shockingly smart, Gossip Girl is the most fun we have watching television in a given week. When it first premiered last fall, we took issue with the fact that we didn't care about any of the characters. Now our hearts break for... Blair and Chuck? It takes a special kind of show to illicit feelings for what are, ostensibly, two awful human beings. And yet Gossip Girl makes us want to friend them on Facebook. You can call Gossip Girl a derivative teen soap, Dynasty, Jr., or even a sign of the coming apocalypse. We'll just call it the best show of the year.

The nine regular members of Gossip Girl's cast dominated headlines this year; 90210's 10 stars scored legions of fans and the 14 actors and actresses of Desperate Housewives were, once again, water cooler conversation.

With a proliferation of options and a desperation for viewers, studio and network executives are relying on big casts to deliver hits. Though more actors can lead to higher production costs and publicity challenges, they also offer more opportunities to captivate--and retain--viewers, particularly on the small screen. And so the population boom continues, with several big casts boasting a banner year.

"When you're focusing on the same character episode after episode, year after year, by the time you get to 100 episodes, you've pretty much exhausted what you can do," says TV historian Tim Brooks, co-author of The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable Shows. "Writers like [ensembles] because they give them a much broader palette to work on."

Having more characters--and thus more character interactions--to work with can be highly appealing for a show's producer looking to spice up week-to-week storylines. What's more, the larger casts mean creative teams are less dependent on a single actor, giving them the flexibility to write around things like pregnancies (Desperate Housewives' Marcia Cross), schedules (Grey's Anatomy's Katherine Heigl) and departures (Criminal Minds' Mandy Patinkin).

Unlike a single-lead series, which can be a turn-off for viewers who don't like the character or his or her tale, ensembles offer variety for the audience as well. Take the CW's pop culture stalwart Gossip Girl. Don't care for the series' bad-girl-turned-good Serena van der Woodsen? Enjoy the poorly timed pairings of Blair Waldorf and Chuck Bass or Nate Archibald and Jenny Humphrey instead. Even the characters' parents offer their own career dilemmas and dating mishaps.

The trend towards larger casts--whether they feature a single star and several supporting actors or a large cast of equally important characters--can be traced back to the 1970s hit The Mary Tyler Moore Show, according to TV historian Robert Thompson, the founding director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. The long-running comedy featured a host of regular characters based in Mary Richards' newsroom, as well as those in and around her home. Moore's production company furthered the trend on the drama side with Hill Street Blues, a1980s series with a cast similarly large for its time.

We took a look at the top actors who generate the most "hot" queries and found a few surprises. Bombshell Blake Lively of "Gossip Girl" tops the list — no surprise there. But Fran Drescher of "The Nanny" comes in third. Even to us, intrepid explorers of Search, that came as a shock.

Some shows are so loaded with talent, it's hard to choose a favorite star; we count down our 10 favorite.

Could you imagine Cheers without Norm? Seinfeld without Newman? Twin Peaks without that dancing midget? These shows of the past were rare in that their casts were practically perfect, top to bottom. Now, strong ensembles are all over the place.

When searching for our favorite 10 ensemble casts, we were awestruck at how many we nominated and had a very tough time trimming the list. Are these the absolute best? No, but they're our personal favorites. Your comments have been great so far in our other lists, and we want to hear what you sleuths think we missed. Let's get on with it!

10. One Tree Hill
Led by Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty, One Tree Hill boasts one of the best young casts on television. Plus, we've watched them grow up before our eyes and they haven't missed a step.

9. 30 Rock
I know, I know, 30 Rock at number nine? Like we said, the field is packed. Alec Baldwin is sublime as Jack, but what really makes this show work is the way all the zany characters pop in and out of Liz Lemon's daily routine with ease.

8. Gossip Girl
They're young. They're hot. No wonder they're all hooking up with each other offscreen. Did we mention they're hot? This guilty pleasure sits at number eight because we can't keep our eyes off them.

7. Mad Men
Almost no one knew who John Hamm was a few years ago. Now he's everywhere thanks to playing Don Draper, and he owes a lot to those who work daily with him. The men are 1960s men (Tullamore Dew on the rocks for lunch, please), and the women--oh my, the women--are 1960s women (I'm talking about you, Christina Hendricks).
Will we see these two tango together again?


6. Lost
ABC's best product helped redefine the ensemble cast thanks to its spectacular diversity. Where else can you watch an hour of television that looks like a Benetton ad? And with Michael Emerson, Ken Leung, Jeremy Davies, and Rebecca Mader joining the cast as the show progressed, it only got better.

5. Pushing Daisies
Imagine you are casting a show about a pie-maker who brings the dead back to life and solves crimes with a money-hungry P.I. Add a dead crush, a pint-sized waitress, and synchronized swimming aunts. Yeah, we couldn't do better either. This is perfection.

4. The Office
Each piece of this comedy puzzle is a perfect fit. Could Andy, Creed, Angela, or Oscar have their own show? Probably not. But then again, Michael Scott probably couldn't either (yes, Dwight could). The Office is a team effort, and the finest example of a comedy ensemble.

3. Battlestar Galactica
Producers have been circling the Battlestar cast like bloodthirsty sharks ever since an end date to this sci-fi epic was announced, and it's easy to see why. They're all moving on to big roles with no problems. The Emmys have ignored them, but we haven't.
Kyle and Connie are a dynamite duo.


2. The Wire
Bunk. McNulty. Stringer. Avon. Carver. Herc. Daniels. Bubbles. Michael. Dukie. Greggs. Freamon. Prez. Bodie. Carcetti. Marlo. Chris. Snoop. And of course, Omar. The best show ever on television also has one of the best casts ever. Again, the Emmys have ignored them, but we haven't.

1. Friday Night Lights
If you've never seen Kyle Chandler (can any other actor say more without speaking a word?) and Connie Britton on the screen at the same time, you've never seen a drama about everyday people. And let's not forget how far Landry has come. Each performer is their character--this is acting. Emmys? Hello?


Honorable Mention: The Simpsons, Dirty Sexy Money, Rescue Me, Brothers & Sisters, Chuck
